JOB SUMMARY:   Consultant is responsible for providing care for his/her patients (inpatient and outpatient) maintaining a high level of professional performance in accordance with: Professional medical ethics and JCIA standards. Should participate actively in daily unit management activities necessary for the efficient, timely and consistent delivery of ICU services to the patient of the hospital. These activities include but are not limited to:   Triage and bed allocation, discharge planning. Recommendation of unit policies and procedures and supervision of application of unit policies. Participation in ongoing Quality Improvement, Infection Control activities including supervision of data collection in addition to membership of committees including Code Blue Committee. Interaction with other department as necessary to facilitate the management of patients and smooth operation of ICU. Review of the appropriate utilization of ICU resources in hospital. Recommend equipment purchases and changes, and have input on structural and design changes within the unit. Provide the Medical Director with the recommendations on the activities, morbidities, mortalities and major changes in the ICU/CCU.   Should conduct regular ICU rounds with ICU team and see patients as often as required by acuity but at least twice daily. Investigations and management of patients with medical problems related to his subspeciality, even if under the primary care of other attending physicians but with prior permission and willingness of the primary physician concerned using subspeciality related invasive and non invasive procedures. Collaborative assistance in referrals of above type of patients to appropriate facilities for further management if resources of this institution are not adequate. Should be able to perform the usual critical care procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic as indicated by the competence, capability; including but not limited to: Maintenance of the airway to include endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. Placement of Intravascular Catheters and monitoring devices including: One ) Arterial lines Two) Peripheral and central venous lines Three) Pulmonary artery catheters Cardiopulmonary resuscitation Placement of transvenous temporary pacing lead wire. Tube Thoracostomy. Should be able to serve as the team leader providing managed care within the ICU, integrating and tiliating the care of the patient with complex illness or injury including multi system failure. Active participation in Continuing Medical Education through national/international medical meetings. This includes Morbidity and Mortality, Morning Reports, grand Rounds, clinical Seminars, journal Club, X-ray and Clinico-Pathological Conference. Keep current with medical literature. Executes the plan, approved by the Consultant/Senior Registrar.   Seeks the advice and guidance of his seniors whenever the condition of a patient merits further expertise.   Documents all plans in the patient's charts and keeps an updated follow-up in the progress notes.   Presents the previous day's admissions in the morning report when resident on duty.         Participates in the On-Call Rota of the Department for patient care and admissions.   Executes all diagnostic procedures required on the patient (e.g. bone marrow aspirations and biopsy, lumbar puncture, personal cavities aspirations, etc.) after consultation with the Senior Staff.   Participates in the delivery of medical care in the outpatient services (e.g. OPD and ER) under the supervision of the Senior Staff.   Rotates through the specialized inpatient units (ICU, CCU, Hemodialysis, etc.), if needed, under the supervision of the Senior Staff Member in-charge.   Prepares problem lists, discharge summaries, death reports and special reports on patients, when needed.   Participates in CME through medical meetings.
