Job Description

Job Summary

Provides care for patients from various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and to recognize and effectively treat life threatening conditions. Delivers care of patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation

Duties and Responsibilities

 

 

  • Administrative

 

 

 

 

  • Performs shift in charge role, involves in decision making, guides and supports nursing staff in their daily nursing assignments.

 

 

  • Takes an active role in the orientation, follow-up and evaluation of new nursing staff in the unit

 

 

  • Acts as facilitator/mentor/preceptor to less experienced nursing staff, including pre and post registered nursing students

 

 

  • Evaluates on-going nursing practices and provides suggestions for changes as the need arises

 

 

  • Coordinates admissions/transfers/discharges and arranging for continuing outpatient services or home health care services.

 

 

 

 

  • Clinical

 

 

 

 

  • Competently utilizes nursing process in the performance of nursing care activities.

 

 

  • Responds effectively in emergency situations and unexpected circumstances, accepting additional workload according to staffing and patient ratio needs.

 

 

  • Performs triage, considering both physical and psychosocial elements.

 

 

  • Assess patients utilizing the Morse Fall Scale for Fall Risk Assessment.

 

 

  • Assess patient for Pain Management utilizing the Wong Baker Face scale and FLACC and FRAP assessment tool as appropriate

 

 

  • Maintains safe custody, administration and documentation of medications and narcotics   according MOH regulations and international standards.

 

 

  • Gives and receives handover of patients, maintains records, reports and other documents, ensuring confidentiality, legibility and accuracy.

 

 

  • Works cooperatively and communicates effectively with colleagues as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide high quality nursing care.

 

 

  • Assess unit needs and available resources for current and incoming shifts, review of patient history, medication records and exchange information for continuity of care.

 

 

  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in providing effective patient and family education.

 

 

  • Monitors and utilizes appropriate unit stock items and other resources in a cost effective manner.  Ensures all used consumables and procedures are charged as per RCH policy

 

 

  • Deployment or float to various clinical services where required

 

 

 

 

  • Quality Improvement

 

 

 

 

  • Knows the Nursing Department’s Key Performance Indicators and standards of compliance.

 

 

  • Participates and promotes continuous quality improvement and accreditation activities,

 

 

  • Participates in all nursing quality improvement initiatives including implementation and evaluation of action plans.

 

 

  • Complies with Safety, Risks and Infection Control Policies, Procedures & Guidelines.

 

 

  • Ensures sustainability of compliance to JCIA and CBAHI accreditation standards.

 

 

  • Ensures incidents and accidents are reported on time.

  • Participates in unit and departmental educational activities including preceptorship to nursing staff orientees.

 

 

  • Completes relevant study programs, unit-specific and mandatory nursing competencies within the specified time frames, i.e.  BCLS, ACLS, ATLS, Fire Safety Training, etc.

 

 

 

 

  • Patient and Family Education

 

 

 

 

  • Responsible to educate patients /families as per their needs and to implement their whole role regarding patient / family education process as mention in patient & family education policy and procedure including documentation in patient medical record.

 

 

 

  • They are knowledgeable about their essential role in patient and family education.

 

 

  • Involves the patient/families in plan of care and respects patients/families regarding their goals and choices of patient care.
