Job Description
- Collects blood from patient in the hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes
- Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
- Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
- Performs bleeding times as ordered by physicians, taking care to limit the depth and length of the incision so as not to damage tissue unnecessarily.
- Transports specimens in a timely manner form the collection areas of patient’s rooms to the Clinical Laboratory.
- Handles minor patients / donor’s reactions in a calm and orderly fashion but in a manner to prevent harm to the patient. Informs supervisor or work director of any patient reactions.
- Follow all safety and Infection Control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, when performing phlebotomy procedures and handling biological specimens.
- Assures that the work area is maintained in an orderly manner and is cleaned and disinfected regularly to avoid contamination.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory perform phlebotomy procedures on patients of all age groups. These include neonatal.
- Working knowledge of Quality Control methods in assigned area and Quality Improvement program based on International Standard, e.g. JCIA standard, ISO 9000 Laboratory standards.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Complies with hospital dress code.
- Responsible to educate patients /families as per their needs and to implement their whole role regarding patient / family education process as mention in patient & family education policy and procedure (NSP-GEN-014) including documentation in patient medical record.
- They are knowledgeable about their essential role in patient and family education.
- Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities.

Supervises:
- Has daily, direct contact with patients, patients families and Clinical Laboratory staff, nurses and Physicians.
Qualifications:
A minimum of:
- Bachelor’s Degree/ ore equivalent from an approved school of medical Technology, College or University.
- Current registration with the designated authority for Medical Technologist / Technician from country of origin/ recruitment + license of Ministry of Health (MOH) in Saudi Arabia.
- Certified Phlebotomist from Saudi Council.
Experience:
- Required:
Four (4) years including Phlebotomy training class or satisfactory on-the-job-training.
Skills Description
- Fluency in verbal and written English.
- Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Good manual dexterity is essential in order to perform invasive procedures safety and effectively.
- Must have knowledge of basic human anatomy, especially the circulatory system.
- Working knowledge of computer skills.
- Knowledge of current proficiency testing and quality control.
