Phlebotomist

• Collects blood from patient in the hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes.

• Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.

• Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.

• Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.

• Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.

• Performs bleeding times as ordered by physicians, taking care to limit the depth and length of the incision so as not to damage tissue unnecessarily.

• Transports specimens in a timely manner form the collection areas of patient’s rooms to the Clinical Laboratory.

• Handles minor patients / donor’s reactions in a calm and orderly fashion but in a manner to prevent harm to the patient. Informs supervisor or work director of any patient reactions. 
• Follow all safety and Infection Control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, when performing phlebotomy procedures and handling biological specimens.

• Assures that the work area is maintained in an orderly manner and is cleaned and disinfected regularly to avoid contamination.

• Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory perform phlebotomy procedures on patients of all age groups. These include neonatal.

• Working knowledge of Quality Control methods in assigned area and Quality Improvement program based on International Standard, e.g. JCIA standard, ISO 9000 Laboratory standards.

• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

• Complies with hospital dress code.

• Responsible to educate patients /families as per their needs and to implement their whole role regarding patient / family education process as mention in patient & family education policy and procedure (NSP-GEN-014) including documentation in patient medical record.
• They are knowledgeable about their essential role in patient and family education.

• Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities.

• Chief Technologist

Supervises:

• Has daily, direct contact with patients, patients families and Clinical Laboratory staff, nurses and Physicians.

 Qualifications:

A minimum of:

• Bachelor’s Degree/ ore equivalent from an approved school of medical Technology, College or University.
• Current registration with the designated authority for Medical Technologist / Technician from country of origin/ recruitment + license of Ministry of Health (MOH) in Saudi Arabia.
• Certified Phlebotomist from Saudi Council.

Experience:

• Required:

Four (4) years including Phlebotomy training class or satisfactory on-the-job-training.

• Fluency in verbal and written English.

• Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

• Good manual dexterity is essential in order to perform invasive procedures safety and effectively.

• Must have knowledge of basic human anatomy, especially the circulatory system.

• Working knowledge of computer skills.

• Knowledge of current proficiency testing and quality control.
