Phlebotomist

 

 

• The Phlebotomist technician is responsible for drawing blood from patients or blood donors and records identity of patient or donors.

 

 

 

 

• Collects blood from patient in the hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes

 

 

 

 

 

• Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.

 

 

 

 

 

• Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.

 

 

 

 

 

• Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.

 

 

 

 

 

• Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.

 

 

 

 

 

• Performs bleeding times as ordered by physicians, taking care to limit the depth and length of the incision so as not to damage tissue unnecessarily.

 

 

 

 

 

• Transports specimens in a timely manner form the collection areas of patient’s rooms to the Clinical Laboratory.

 

 

 

 

 

• Handles minor’s patient’s / donor’s reactions in a calm and orderly fashion but in a manner to prevent harm to the patient. Informs supervisor or work director of any patient reactions.

 

 

 

 

 

• Follow all safety and Infection Control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, when performing phlebotomy procedures and handling biological specimens.

 

 

 

 

 

• Assures that the work area is maintained in an orderly manner and is cleaned and disinfected regularly to avoid contamination.

 

 

 

 

 

• Must able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory perform phlebotomy procedures on patients of all age groups. These include neonatal.

 

 

 

 

 

• Working knowledge of Quality Control methods in assigned area and Quality Improvement program based on national & International Standard, e.g. CBAHI, JCIA Laboratory standards.

 

 

• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

 

 

 

 

 

• Complies with hospital dress code.

 

 

 

 

Certified laboratory specialist / technician from Saudi Council

Four (2) years including Phlebotomy training class or satisfactory on-the-job-training.

 

 

• Fluency in verbal and written English.

 

 

• Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

 

 

• Good manual dexterity is essential in order to perform invasive procedures safety and effectively.

 

 

• Must have knowledge of basic human anatomy, especially the circulatory system.

 

 

• Working knowledge of computer skills.

 

 

• Knowledge of current proficiency testing and quality control.
